Cave & Rock paintings  are paintings found on cave  walls and ceilings, and especially refer to those of prehistoric  origin. The earliest such rock art  in Europe  dates back to the Aurignacian  period, approximately 40,000 years ago, and is found in the El Castillo cave  in Cantabria , Spain . The exact purpose of the paleolithic  cave paintings is not known. ~ Wikipedia
It seems that folks have been painting on rocks for a long time!  This bison is amazing ... it was found in the Cave of Altamira, near Santander, Spain.

They say that as we grow older we tend to go back to our roots.  Well, it seems that has happened to me!  As a kid, I would collects bags and bags of rocks much to my Mother's concern.  I guess it was just natural to eventually DO something with my treasures and that is exactly what I did.

My Dad bought me a few cans of paint, a couple of brushes and I sat down at the picnic table and created!  My late sister was the recipient of many of these treasures and she kept them for years outside in her garden.

Well, life and circumstances changed and my artistic side took a backseat to the more practical ways of making a living.

... Fast forward to present day ... I am retired, living in Austria and I have time to go back to one of my first loves ... painting rocks! My husband was stunned when I shared with him my girlhood passion, but like any good man, he to went out and bought me paint and brushes!

So my friends, Whimsical Painted Rocks has been born!

For many years "making a living" got in the way of my passion for painting on rocks, but as the years have slipped by my desire to put "paint to rock" has increased and now this American girl has moved to Austria.

Believe it or not I live in a village named Breitenau am Steinfeld ... translated from German that means the "Stone Fields of Breitenau" and indeed it is covered with stones and rocks.

What can I say ... it is paradise for the rock lover in me ... my "canvas awaits" right out my front door!
